About the Sydney Branch of ASSLH

Welcome to the web page of the Sydney Branch of the Australian Society for the Study of Labour History. Membership of the branch is open to all persons interested in the history of working life and labour movements. The Federal ASSLH, which publishes the journal Labour History, was formed in 1961, and the Sydney Branch has been active since 1981. Sydney Branch members receive regular notices of activities through our newsletter, Labour History News, and copies of the twice-yearly branch bulletin, The Hummer.

In 2002, the branch published Communism in Australia: A Supplementary Resource Bibliography, c.1994-2001, Compiled by Beverley Symons with an Introduction by Stuart Macintyre. In 1998 the branch published The Great Labour Movement Split: Inside Stories, edited by Bradon Ellem.

Seminars
The Sydney Branch holds regular seminars on Sunday afternoons. Those interested in meeting for a drink and a meal afterwards have plenty of choices in nearby Chinatown. Recent seminars included: A Tribute to Lives and Work of Bob, Edgar & Lloyd Ross, with Mark Hearn, Stephen Holt and John Shields and Connections: The Writing of Biography, with Harry Knowles, Peter Love and Lyndall Ryan. Conferences
The Sydney Branch of ASSLH holds occasional conferences and other events and also promotes the biennial National Labour History Conference and conferences held by other Branches and by the Labour History Group of the University of Sydney.

In 1999, the Branch organised two Conferences, in February and September: 'On the Waterfront: Union Gains and Struggles 1890-1998' and 'Immigration, Racism and the Labour Movement'. In 2000, the Branch co-sponsored a Seminar to mark the 80th anniversary of the formation of the Communist Party of Australia in 1920; and held a Labour History Tour of Lithgow. In September 2001 the Branch held a two-day conference 'Social Protest Movements and the Labour Movement: 1965-1975'.
